JOSEPH RAPHAEL

Joseph Raphael was born in Jackson, California, in 1869, and studied at the San Francisco School of Design before leaving for Paris to attend the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Academie Julian. While continuing to exhibit his works in galleries in San Francisco, Raphael would remain a resident of Europe for 37 years, spending time in France, Holland, and Belgium. Only with the approach of WW II did he return to California, where his pure Impressionist style was well received. He was very influential in bringing the French Impressionist style of painting to the United States, especially Northern California. His works often feature loose brushwork and heavy impasto, attention to atmospheric effects, and rich, saturated colors.
