Currently Available Artworks:

Percy Gray was a leading California Impressionist painter best known for his lyrical landscapes of Northern and Central California. Closely associated with the Monterey Peninsula, Gray played a significant role in shaping the visual identity of California Impressionism during the early 20th century. His paintings are admired for their soft atmospheric light, harmonious color, and poetic interpretation of the California landscape.

Born in San Francisco, Gray studied at the California School of Design (now the San Francisco Art Institute) and later traveled extensively throughout Europe, where he absorbed the influence of French Impressionism. Upon returning to California, he developed a distinctive style that balanced structural composition with a gentle, tonal approach to light and mood. Gray frequently painted along the coast and inland valleys, capturing rolling hills, cypress groves, oak trees, and pastoral scenes with quiet elegance.

Gray was an active member of California’s early art community and exhibited widely throughout his career. He was closely associated with a group of progressive West Coast artists often referred to as the “Group of Eight,” which included painters such as Armin Hansen, William Ritschel, and Carl Oscar Borg. His work was shown regularly at major California venues, including the Bohemian Club, where he was a long-standing and respected member.

Today, Percy Gray is recognized as an important figure in early California landscape painting. His works are held in numerous public and museum collections, and his paintings continue to be sought after for their refined beauty and historical significance within California Impressionism.
